First Aid in Schools

St John NT has been delivering school-based community education for over twenty years. We believe that every child in the Territory should have access to vital first aid knowledge. Our team of experienced and highly trained professionals are passionate about empowering students with these life-saving skills and can tailor the training sessions to be age appropriate, engaging and fun.

The First Aid in Schools Program is offered to students from preschool to Year 12 and teaches the basics of first aid and resuscitation. The sessions are tailored to the students’ age and abilities, the timeframe available, and can be structured to align with the school curriculum. Be it familiarising students with an ambulance, how to call Triple Zero (000) or what to do if bitten by a snake, the program encourages students to learn new skills and understand the importance of what to do in a medical emergency.

The program includes:

Classes range from 30 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on the age of the student, activities include basic first aid through to DRSABCD, choking, wound care, bleeding control, burn care.

Time permitting, students may explore an ambulance and play with St John NT equipment, puzzles and games

Approx. 1 hour per session, lessons can be tailored to include an introduction to DRSABCD, rural first aid awareness, or to the specific class needs, and can be structured to align with the school curriculum.

A whole school booking can be arranged to deliver first aid lessons to every class in the school. The number of classes and students in the school will determine the length of the booking required at each school.

Ideally, the school will be able to provide the Community Education Team a set room at the school (usually the library, dance room or hall) and the classes come to that room at their allocated time.

The Year 10 First Aid Program is delivered over 5 - 10 weeks (16 – 20 hours) and can be as part of the compulsory class for year 10s (PLP, EWL, ETC). This program is generally delivered during class time at the end of the Semester and can be delivered as an accredited or unaccredited program.

Out Of School Hour Care in schools can book Community Education officers to attend during the school holidays or school term to deliver first aid skill sessions including scenario setups and an ambulance visit
