Media Release: New survey ranks training and development as a key motivator to volunteer

New survey ranks training and development as a key motivator to volunteer

A recent survey by St John NT found that the top three things their volunteers enjoy most are opportunities for training and development, supporting the community and connecting with likeminded volunteers.

The organisation conducted the survey across its volunteer members to gain greater insight into what motivates them to volunteer as part of a 2023 recruitment drive.

“St John NT provides excellent pathways to a career in health, from those just starting out to people already working in the sector who are looking for a unique opportunity to put their clinical skills to use,” said Director of Volunteer, Event and Community Education Maria Rooney.

First aid training and certificates offered to St John NT volunteers also count toward NTCET VET points for qualifications including Cert II in Medical Service First Response and Cert III in Basic Health Care.

Results from the 2023 survey also showed:

  • More than a third of the volunteers joined St John NT to support their local community
  • Almost a third, 27%, joined because they were interested in a career in health.
  • 95% of respondents said they were likely or very likely to recommend volunteering with St John NT to a friend.

St John NT’s volunteer recruitment campaign aims to encourage new membership to help meet the demand for first aid services at community events.

Bookings have already been received for major events across the NT including Garma Festival, Bass in the Grass, V8 Supercars and the FINKE Desert Race.

“We are putting the call out to all Territorians who would like to be part of all that becoming a volunteer has to offer, to consider signing up with St John NT, the invitation is open to everyone,” said Ms. Rooney.

From students seeking an after-school activity, new arrivals to the NT looking for a way to meet people or healthcare professionals who want to put their skills to use in a unique practical environment, St John NT provides meaningful opportunities that cater to everyone.

“When we asked if they have any advice for new volunteers, respondents to the survey said volunteering is a fun experience with the opportunity to learn valuable skills along the way and to just give it a go!” said Ms. Rooney.

Volunteer induction training is held once a month with the next sessions scheduled to be held on 6 March 2023.
